Our Tourist Office is the first Intercommunal to have emerged in the department. It brings together 19 municipalities, the capital of which is the town of Thuir. We therefore manage a territory of 230 km², of nearly 20,000 inhabitants. The Aspres mean “Arid” in Catalan. Our territory has many contrasting landscapes where heritage and gastronomy mingle. It is located in the foothills of Canigou and offers magnificent views of the sea. Our territory is littered with small villages full of charm, churches and Roman chapels. The capital of Aspres, Thuir, is a dynamic, cultural city with many shops. Nearby, Castelnou, a medieval village, classified among the most beautiful villages in France, is the nugget of our Aspres. The flora is quite varied, ranging from vineyards to orchards and cork oaks and scrubland on the heights. The Aspres are also a gourmet territory: we have many small producers (honey, duck, snails) and many winegrowers in IGP but also and especially in AOP Côtes du Roussillon and Côtes du Roussillon village “Les Aspres” for some.
Ranked among the most beautiful villages in France, the village of Castelnou is a jewel in its setting: the Aspres. Come and explore this medieval village, accompanied by Laurence, your guide. The latter, keen on history and heritage, will give you all the details on the history of the village and will accompany you in its narrow streets to the castle at the top, and down to visit the small church of Notre Dame del Mercadal. .
