CAMINS DE L'EXILI, Camprodon-Prats de Molló-Camprodon (ruta circular transfronterera)

Living in Prats de Molló at the foot of the Coll d'Ares and walking along the cross-border ridge that separates northern Catalonia and southern Catalonia served as inspiration for me to design “Camins de l'Exili”, a first Cultural Itinerary located between the counties of Alt Vallespir, Ripollès and Alta Garrotxa based on republican exile at the end of the Spanish Civil War fleeing to France from Franco's troops (1939) and the Jewish exodus during World War II fleeing to in Spain of Nazism (1940-1944). A circular cross-border route on foot between Camprodon and Prats de Molló, 58 kilometers away. My intention as a mountain guide has been to offer the hiker, an informative burden that will help him during the journey to relive and become aware of the historical facts that brings us the heritage linked to the different cultural landscapes for which the route passes. The results of this research and the guidance of the Director of the Center for Regional Studies of Ripollès, Mr. Antoni Llagostera made me see that the focus of the project, although inspired by the Paths of Exile, could not be reductionist. It was therefore necessary to incorporate a historical meaning into the itinerary in which other tangible and intangible assets were taken into account. It is true, however, that I had to put aside a good deal of the information gathered but I could not stray from the initial goal which was to make a small complementary guide to the map. It is a self-guided circular and cross-border mid-mountain route 58 km / 36 miles away. The route can be done in a south-north or north-south direction, crossing the mountains of the Pyrenees Orientales between the Catalan counties of Ripollès (province of Girona) and Alt Vallespir (Languedoc-Roussillon region). To have a complete experience we recommend our 11-day and 12-night package that includes the route plus 5 guided excursions to the most relevant places in the area. For those who have less time we also have options to do the itinerary in 6-days / 7-nights, 4-days / 5-nights or 3-days / 4-nights for the more athletic. You can make your choice based on your interests, the time available and the pace of walking that is most comfortable for you. At each stage you will find recommended excursions that you can hire with a mountain guide (in the package of 11 days and 12 nights, these excursions are guided and are included in the price). If you wish you can also do them on your own by taking extra days. It is important to take into account the daily times of each stage, the times of the recommended excursion and your physical condition to assess whether you do it on the same day or add extras.

Chased and fled, our goal is to cross the border (one night). "It's night and it's cold, we are hiding at the foot of the mountain waiting for a clandestine pin to pick us up. We will walk at night in silence, with fear and hope. We will cross the border avoiding controls and we will arrive at a friendly rural house that will welcome us before continuing our journey towards freedom ”. We will experience the sensations of crossing the border at night and stealthily. The activity will take place entirely at night and the total duration will be about 15 hours, including the presentation, trek and overnight. The night walk that can be chosen (long or short) is suitable for anyone with good physical condition and also for children accompanied from 12 years. The information given is minimal which creates uncertainty and makes the walk psychologically harder. In fact this is one of the goals of the experience. The activity (trek and overnight) complies with full safety guarantees for all participants. In case of rain or snow the activity is not canceled, in any case the cancellation decision will always be of the pin.

RECORDANT A WALTER BENJAMIN (ruta transfronterera)

We will take the train to Portbou and change the border to Cerbère, stations that still maintain their aesthetics and tell us about their past of movement and wealth. Once in Banyuls we will start the path that will take us to Portbou crossing the border following the path taken by Walter Benjamin. We will experience his hopes and anxieties before his sad destiny and we will do small readings of his work while we enjoy wonderful views of Les Alberes and the Mediterranean Sea. ” Walter Benjamin's passage through the town of Portbou, at the northern end of the Costa Brava and on the border between Catalonia and France, lasted just over 12 hours. Its wake, however, extends to the present day. This German Jewish thinker (Berlin, 1892) who on September 26, 1940, crossed the Franco-Spanish border fleeing Nazism with the intention of reaching Portugal and embarking for America, died in this small town on the coast. Catalan. A death silenced by the Franco regime for decades but which, since the restoration of democracy, has been recovered and dignified.
