Route of Exile

1936

The outbreak of the Spanish Civil War forces thousands of families to leave their homes towards lands of peace.

1939

The war’s result, with the installing of Franco’s dictatorship, drives those who had been involved in the republican resistance to escape from the country, fleeing the regime’s persecution.

2021

The Route of Exile takes us to follow the footsteps of the Spanish refugees who head for exile, almost 90 years ago.

Forces to leave their homeland behind, most of the exiled Spanish people crossed the Pyrenees to find asylum in the French Republic, in a Europe that stood in the gates of World War II… Out of the frying pan into the fire. Thousands of Spaniards ended up in internment camps in Southern France, where they lived under deplorable conditions. Many of them never left.

The Route of Exile is 4-days trip which takes us through some of the most significant places in this history of escape and exile, to visit sites overflowing historical memory, and to learn from the past to head for a better future.

A route to never forget.
