The last days of the republican Catalonia

On this 3 days and 2 nights trip, we will feel how the last days of the republican Catalonia were like on a guided itinerary from Maçanet de Cabrenys to Elne. We will walk through el Coll de Lli and el Coll de la Manrella, the separation of the north and the south of Catalonia. There, we will visit the memorial to the president of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Lluís Companys, and we will remember the passage through these paths of two other presidents, José Antonio Aguirre (Basque Country) and Manuel Azaña (Spain).

We will follow this itinerary to La Jonquera and visit the Exile Museum (MUME), a space for the memory of the different conflicts that caused exiles throughout the 20th century across the Pyrenees.

We will rest in Perpignan and we will restart the trip discovering the refugees’ camp of Bacarès, built in 1939 with the aim of receiving republican refugees. It was dissolved in 1942 with between 70,000 and 80,000 having passed through.

We will finish the trip visiting the Elne Maternity Hospital, a centre promoted by the Swiss nurse Elisabeth Eidenbenz. In this place, pregnant women from the Roussillon concentration camps were cared for, guaranteeing them a decent birth and becoming an oasis of peace in the horror of war and exile.
