The republican’s withdrawal

On this route we will follow the traces of the republican’s withdrawal from the Catalan Pyrenees to France, where nearly 500,000 people went into exile in the winter of 1939. We will initiate this trip with a guided walking tour through the Coll Pregon, where we will discover how the last days of Camprodon were like and the passage of the 60th division, the last combatants of the republican army.

We will also visit the old town of Camprodon and the Retirada’s Museum, a photographic compilation that aims to be a reminder of the passage of refugees.

We will continue the itinerary through Coll d’Ares to Prats de Molló. This French village became an improvised camp where thousand of refugees were cared for.

At this point, you can choose which itinerary you want to follow to end the trip. Whether to visit the Elna Maternity Hospital and the refugee camp of Argelés-ser-mer, or visiting the old town and the Sainte Juste et Sainte Ruffine’s church in Prats de Molló; and Collioure, the town where the tomb of Antonio Machado is located. He died there on 22 February 1939 after 27 days in exile.
