The exile of the Catalan intellectuals

In this 4-day guided itinerary, we will follow the steps towards the exile to France of some Catalan intellectuals such as Pompeu Fabra, Rovira i Virgili, Pau Casals, Josep Maria de Segarra, or Julià Gual. We will initiate this tour from Bellver de Cerdanya, where we will discover the CNT militant Antonio Martin’s legend, also known as the lame man of Málaga, and his connection with the assault on the village in April 1937. We will continue to Prades (France) where many of these intellectuals lived in the old Gran Hotel. Pau Casals, for example, lived in this town until 1957 from where he promoted cultural initiatives of resistance and condemnation of Franco’s regime. We will visit Perpignan, the capital of Roussillon, where we will stroll through its old town and we’ll discover its role in the catalan exile.

On the last day, we will travel to Argelès-sur-mer, where we will visit the memorial of the concentration camp located on the beach, shelter for over 80,000 people. This concentration camp was built in February 1939, often offering inhuman life conditions that led to its closure in 1942. We will finish this itinerary visiting the Elna Matenity Hospital, a center promoted by the Swiss nurse named Elisabeth Eidenbenz. In this location they looked after pregnant women that were in the Roussillon concentration camps guaranteeing them a dignified birthing.
