Circuit along the routes of exile and salvation
During the Spanish Civil War, the reign of Franco in Spain, and WWII, thousands of Spanish Republicans and Jews fled to France over the Pyrenees through Empordà, Ripollès, Cerdanya and Pallars border crossings to escape the horrors of war. This circuit follows the steps of thousands of men, women and children who took to the routes of exile to save their lives. We invite you to go on an unforgettable journey down the memory of our recent history.
The Epiremed circuit along the routes of exile includes some of the places on the border where La Retirada occurred and the memorials that were built in memory of those events such as La Jonquera Exile Memorial Museum (MUME), the prison in the town of Sort, Epicentro de Tremp, Espacios del Merengue, Argelès-sur-Mer beach, the Swiss Maternity Hospital in Elne, and Rivesaltes Camp.
This route full of history will awaken in you a keen critical and humanitarian awareness. The memory of this dramatic event is intertwined in the hiking trails and evocative landscapes that witnessed the odyssey that thousands of people embarked on eighty years prior to flee the horrors of war in search of freedom.
